Before Departure
Before you can start your Frankfurt Airport Departure, you of course have to get to the airport. There are several options:
- By car:
Autobahns A3, A67, and A5 will take you directly to Frankfurt Airport. Sign-posts guide you to the terminals. Do not forget to plan ahead for Parking at Frankfurt Airport. - Public Transport
Via Bahn, Regio (both subsidiaries of Deutsche Bahn AG) , S-Bahn (lines S8 and S9, shuttle-trains from Frankfurt) and by bus - Airline Shuttles
Between Mannheim, Heidelberg and Strasbourg there is a direct shuttle-service to Frankfurt Airport departures.
Where to go for Your Departure?
The departures at Frankfurt Airport leave at Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Your terminal is printed on your ticket. Both terminals are connected via a Hochbahn-shuttle, called Skyline. Transfer between both terminals is no problem.
Departure from Terminal 1 is via Levels 1 and 2. Departures from Terminal 2 are accessed via Levels 2 through 4.
Departure Frankfurt: The Formalities
Check-In
Check-in is usually at the check-in counters of the respective terminals. In addition, there are other check-in options to make the process easier.
- Check-in on the evening before departure
Some airlines offer the options of checking in the evening before departure, if departure from Frankfurt is planned for early the next morning. - For travellers by rail
For travellers arriving by Deutsche Bahn, there is the option of using the AIRail check-in directly at the exit of the airport’s train station. This counter may be used up to 45 minutes before departure. - Automated teller check-in
A check-in by automated teller is especially interesting for travellers carrying only hand luggage. A later luggage check-in is also possible, of course.
Security Checks before Departure at Frankfurt Airport
To guarantee the safety of all travellers, there are sophisticated security-checks before departure. The luggage is checked after check-in, the passengers are searched and the hand luggage scanned.
Passports are checked before flights to destinations outside the Schengen Agreement area.
